In JLPT N1 reading, understanding the general meaning of a passage is not always enough. The four answer choices can all look possible at first, and the most natural-sounding option is not necessarily the best one. To answer with confidence, you need to examine what the passage actually supports.
That is why I created a free JLPT N1 reading practice PDF that does something a little differently: it does not give you the answer immediately.

What Is Included in the Free JLPT N1 Reading PDF?
This free study material contains:
- one original, medium-length N1-style reading passage;
- one reading comprehension question;
- four carefully designed answer choices; and
- short prompts to help you think about the evidence.
The passage and question are original materials created specifically for JLPT N1 learners. They are not taken from an official past examination.
The incorrect choices are designed to be tempting. This gives you an opportunity to practise an important N1 skill: distinguishing between an option that merely sounds reasonable and an option that is supported by the text.
Why Does the PDF Not Include the Answer?
Many JLPT N1 reading practice materials place the answer directly after the question. This is convenient, but it can also make it easy to look at the answer before you have fully examined your own reasoning.
When the answer is visible, you may read the explanation and feel that you understand it. However, that is different from reaching the answer independently under test conditions.
In this PDF, the answer is intentionally withheld. The purpose is not to leave you without support. It is to encourage you to pause and ask yourself:
- What is the question really asking?
- Which part of the passage supports my choice?
- Why do the other options look convincing?
You will find a small number of thinking prompts in the PDF, but they do not reveal the solution. Try to make your own decision before seeking an explanation.
How to Download the Free JLPT N1 Reading Practice PDF
You can access the material in a few simple steps:
- Open the JLPT Compass English website.
- Find the N1 Reading Group Lessons section and select View N1 Reading Course.
- Scroll to the free study material and select Download the Free PDF.
- Enter your email address and accept the privacy policy.

- Open the email from JLPT Compass and follow the download link.
You can open the PDF on a computer or smartphone and save it to your device. If the email does not arrive promptly, please check your spam or promotions folder.
How to Use This JLPT N1 Reading Exercise
Set aside a quiet period and complete the question without searching for an answer. Read the passage, choose one option, and note the part of the text that influenced your decision.
If you change your answer, keep a brief record of why. The moment when two choices both seem possible can be especially useful: it shows you exactly where your reasoning needs closer examination.
The goal is not simply to be correct once. It is to become more aware of how you read, how you compare options, and how confidently you can connect an answer to the passage.

JLPT N1 Preparation for Learners in France and Europe
If you are looking for JLPT N1 preparation in France or elsewhere in Europe, it can be difficult to find live Japanese lessons at a convenient evening time. This walkthrough is scheduled around European time zones rather than Japanese evening hours.
The session takes place on Friday evening in France and much of continental Europe. Because European clocks change seasonally, the time is shown as both CEST and CET. Learners in other regions are welcome, but should confirm the corresponding local time before joining.
The live explanation is conducted in Japanese, making it most suitable for advanced learners preparing for N1. The website, registration process, and study instructions are available in English.
