PROBLEM

You know the vocabulary and grammar —
so why does the range suddenly feel so wide?

Up through N3, you could get by with Japanese centered on everyday, familiar situations. At N2, though, topics and text types you'd never encountered before start showing up all at once — work, school, official procedures, the news. You understand what a grammar point means, but not how it's different from a similar one. You're not sure which situation actually calls for it.

Vocabulary that made sense in a word list doesn't come to mind the moment it shows up in a real sentence. Words you never ran into in everyday conversation start piling up, and news articles or explanatory text suddenly feel much harder.

Even after learning vocabulary and grammar, you don't notice it while reading or listening. "I know this — so why doesn't it feel usable?" A lot of learners keep studying with exactly that feeling.

If this sounds like where you are right now —

it's not that you haven't memorized enough.
You just haven't gotten used to the "range" of Japanese used in Japanese society yet.

SOLUTION

Solve it as homework,
then turn it into something
you can use in class

Typical vocabulary and grammar study tends to treat memorizing the meaning as the goal in itself. But memorizing alone doesn't mean you'll notice it the moment it shows up in a real sentence, a news article, or something at work or school.

In this course, you study and practice the assigned range as homework beforehand, and class time is centered on checking answers — going through, one by one, "what can this grammar point actually explain?" and "where does this word get used?" It's not memorization for a test; it's building an understanding of Japanese as it's actually used in Japanese society.

  • ✓Study and practice the assigned range as homework beforehand
  • ✓Class time centers on checking answers, usage, and how similar expressions differ
  • ✓For grammar, focus on what it lets you explain — reason, condition, judgment, comparison, change
  • ✓For vocabulary used at work, school, in official contexts, and in the news — understand it in context

Not just for the test —
Japanese you can use in society

N2 grammar and vocabulary is Japanese you'll run into directly in Japanese society — at work, at school, in official settings, in the news. The goal isn't memorizing to pass an exam; it's being able to understand it and use it yourself in real sentences and conversations. What you build here helps with reading and listening, of course, and carries straight into everyday life, further study, and work in Japan.

Three Perspectives for N2 Vocabulary & Grammar

Understand what a grammar point lets you explain

Understand what a grammar point
lets you explain

Reason and background, condition, judgment and inference, comparison and change — with N2 grammar, it matters not just to memorize the meaning but to know what using it actually lets you express. We check usage together with real example sentences.

Understand vocabulary in context

Understand vocabulary
in context

Memorizing a word's meaning in a word list isn't enough to notice it in a real sentence. We also practice written-style vocabulary used in news articles, explanatory text, and workplace documents (for example, 減る → 減少する), always in context.

Get exposure to the wider range of topics used in Japanese society

Get exposure to the wider range
of topics in Japanese society

Work, school, government, economy, environment, health, news, social issues — at N2, the range of topics behind the vocabulary and grammar expands all at once. We build up gradually from everyday Japanese toward the Japanese actually used in society.

BENEFIT

Vocabulary & grammar, from knowledge to something you can feel.

Before
  • ✕ Know the meaning, but don't notice it in a real sentence
  • ✕ Differences between similar vocabulary/grammar stay fuzzy
  • ✕ News and explanatory text suddenly feel hard
  • ✕ No clear sense of how far the range of Japanese you can handle actually goes
▶
After
  • ◎ Use vocabulary & grammar you've learned in real sentences and situations
  • ◎ Tell the difference between similar vocabulary/grammar
  • ◎ Gradually get comfortable with news and explanatory text
  • ◎ Broader understanding of Japanese as used in Japanese society

From everyday Japanese to the Japanese used in society.
That progress builds real ability for life, study, and work in Japan.

you need for life in Japan?

Aki Yamamoto

Japanese Language Instructor (JLPT Prep)

With over 12 years of experience teaching Japanese, I've worked with learners around the world through one-on-one lessons on italki and Preply, and currently teach JLPT-level reading and grammar to international students at a language school in Tokyo.

In class, I don't just explain the correct answer and move on. I ask students to put their own thinking into words — where did the connection break down, how long did it take, why did you pick that answer.

Putting your own reasoning into words is what helps you notice how you're learning, and build the ability to correct it yourself.

Yes. Each time, you'll study and practice the assigned range of the textbook before the next class.

Textbook cost is not included in tuition — please arrange your own copy before the course starts.
N2 Vocabulary finishes all 14 sessions on November 25, leaving about 1.5 weeks of review time before the December 6, 2026 JLPT exam.
